Rosters of awards

Roster of Garcia/Asbury Awards

History

The Garcia/Asbury Award was begun in 2008 through the generosity of Dr. Francisco Garcia to honor Dr. Taylor Asbury for his many years of sponsorship of the original Asbury Award and to continue the original spirit and intent of the award. As originally intended, the aim of the award is to recognize annually the best clinical paper given by a 2nd or 3rd year resident during the academic year. The papers are judged by a committee based on two elements that Dr. Cordes always emphasized: clinical science merit and effectiveness of presentation.

The source PDF reproduces three archival letters about the origin of the Asbury Award. Each letter is shown below; select an image to open it full size.

Scanned typewritten letter on University Eye Physicians letterhead from Taylor Asbury, MD of Cincinnati, Ohio to R. Dudley Stone, MD, President of the Frederick C. Cordes Eye Society, dated April 1, 2008, stamped received April 4, 2008. Dr. Asbury explains that Robert E. Hopkins won the first Asbury Award, presented by Dr. Cordes at the April 1957 U.C. Eye residents meeting, and that confusion over the first year arises because the paper was given on October 25, 1956. He notes the Society was renamed the Frederick C. Cordes Eye Society two or three years later, that the award was not given in 2005 or 2006, and that it had been given every year since 1957.View Letter from Taylor Asbury, MD to R. Scanned typewritten letter on University of California Medical Center, School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology letterhead from Frederick C. Cordes, MD, Chairman, to Taylor Asbury, MD in Cincinnati, Ohio, dated April 30, 1957. Dr. Cordes reports that the U.C. Eye Residents Association meeting was one of the most successful they had held, that the Saturday banquet at the Bohemian Club was a success, and that the Asbury Award went to Bob Hopkins as a complete surprise. He thanks Dr. Asbury for his generosity in establishing the award.View Letter from Frederick C. Cordes, MD to Taylor Asbury, MD — April 30, 1957 at full size

Caygill, MD Endowed Chair, Professor and Chairman, to Taylor Asbury, MD, dated January 29, 2008. Dr. McLeod thanks Dr. Asbury for his generosity, assures him that the department will continue to recognize outstanding resident research with an annual Asbury Award winner even though Dr. Asbury can no longer fund it, and notes that 2009 will be the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Cordes Society.View Letter from Stephen D.
