Postdoctoral Research Scholar

We are recruiting a highly motivated and creative scientist to join our team as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar. Highly motivated candidates with a solid record of productivity and a neuroscience background (or related disciplines) are sought. Prior experience with mouse models, confocal imaging, electrophysiology, molecular and cellular neurobiology, and programming are desired. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, preparing and presenting research findings at meetings, helping write scientific manuscripts, and applying for fellowships. The successful candidate will have a recent MD, PhD, or MD/PhD (or equivalent) degree, solid publication record, exemplary written/verbal English communication skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.

The research environment at UCSF is robust and collaborative, with a strong vision science group in the Department of Ophthalmology within a diverse neuroscience community. The Department also has a postdoctoral fellow training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition. The lab is supported by funds from the NIH and other foundations. As a university policy, the salary and stipend levels follow the current NIH/NRSA scale with an additional housing allowance. UCSF provides quality on-campus housing and related services to postdocs.

Please send CV, a statement of career goals (limited to 1 page), and contact information for three references.

Research Specialist

The goal of this position is to provide technical assistance in research experiments, order laboratory materials and supplies, maintain mouse colonies, and manage university compliance protocols. There may also be a component of core confocal microscope management.

The candidate should have experience with mice and be familiar with or eager to learn molecular biology, cell biology, and imaging techniques. Mouse work responsibilities include maintaining and breeding colonies of mice, tissue perfusion and handling, and tissue immunohistochemistry. Lab work responsibilities include DNA preparation and PCR genotyping, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and image analysis and quantification. The applicant need not be familiar with a given procedure but must be highly motivated, willing to learn, and very attentive to details to benefit from instruction. The expectation is for the candidate to achieve independence in regular activities and maintain detailed records. Additional requirements include: ability to work independently and maintain excellent communication with PI and other lab members; ability to multi-task and balance different projects; enthusiasm for working at all levels of research; team player and collaborative spirit; demonstrated excellent record of attendance and punctuality.

Qualified individuals must have a B.S./B.A. in biology, biochemistry, and/or neuroscience or the equivalent and a minimum of 1 year of prior laboratory experience. Preferred qualifications include: Master’s degree and/or one or more years of recent, directly-related laboratory research experience in cell biology and neurobiology following degree completion, utilizing the methods or techniques required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, such as experience in confocal microscopy, fine dissection skills, and an eye for subtle differences in tissue, cell, and sub-cellular structure.

Please send a CV including at least 3 references and a cover letter.
