Fellowship Programs: Education and Career Development
Weekly Conferences
In addition to fellowship-subspecialty specific conferences, the Department of Ophthalmology hosts a weekly Grand Rounds that includes clinical case presentations followed by a lecture by invited guest speakers including ophthalmologists, vision scientists, and physicians in other specialties. Furthermore, a weekly surgical case conference is held in which interesting surgical cases and complications are discussed in a teaching format that generates discussion and learning points.
In addition, UCSF Ophthalmology hosts an annual continuing education conference every December and an annual Research Day in May.

Early Career Development Program
The goal of the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology Early Career Development Program is to educate fellows to be outstanding clinicians and surgeons, well-versed in scientific investigation and teaching, and develop the skills for life-long learning. While each subspecialty or primary mentor will continue to focus on providing excellent clinical and surgical training and/or research mentorship to the fellows, this program will emphasize career and professional skills development opportunities that should greatly enhance the training of our clinical and research fellows.
The curriculum includes:
- Career Development
- Creating a personal development plan
- Practice plans for unexpected situations
- Practical resilience hacks: avoiding physician burnout
- Interviewing & negotiating an academic position
- Interviewing & negotiating a practice position
- Career pathways panel discussions
- Financial planning for the millennial physician
