Welcome to the University of California San Francisco Department of Ophthalmology. We are very proud of our residency program and amazing residents. We train five residents per year in each of three residency years, as well as our joint internship program. The principal objective of our program is to train outstanding ophthalmologists with strong foundations in basic and clinical ophthalmic science. With this, our graduates are able to pursue career pathways in ophthalmic practice, teaching, and research. We are able to provide this training through a combination of excellent formal teaching sessions throughout residency, exposure to appropriate clinical cases at all levels, and ongoing close relationships between residents and an outstanding faculty. We teach critical, inquisitive, and innovative thinking, and we provide research opportunities to all residents. We aim to train the future leaders in ophthalmology.
Our clinical faculty consists of 45 full-time members who represent all subspecialties. In addition to this is our larger full faculty which includes several distinguished PhDs, Emeritus Professors, and visiting faculty, many of whom are world renowned and are very active in our teaching programs. Residents gain diverse training and experience through rotations at UCSF Medical Center, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Zuckerburg San Francisco General Hospital.
The department’s clinical services include: comprehensive ophthalmology, cornea and external eye diseases, refractive surgery, anterior segment surgery, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, neuro-ophthalmology, vitreoretinal disease, uveitis, oculoplastic surgery, ocular oncology, ophthalmic pathology, pharmacology, electrophysiology, visual fields and perimetry, ophthalmic genetics, refraction, low vision, optics and contact lenses. Each of these services is integrated into our teaching program.
The department also has an intimate clinical and research connection to the internationally renowned,
Francis I. Proctor Foundation. The Proctor Foundation specializes in infectious and inflammatory ocular diseases. Through our close ties, our residents are able to rotate through Proctor clinics and participate in international research efforts to prevent world blindness.
“Though I have been mentoring residents for over 25 years, I still get excited to meet our applicants and hear of their accomplishments and experiences and to learn how we can help them achieve their future goals. Our mission here at UCSF is to make sure that we can provide the resources, guidance, and training to help propel the young careers of bright clinicians and scientists who will be tomorrow’s leaders and change-makers in ophthalmology.“
